 Motorola Sucks!
 Date: 2005-09-13 13:40:56
While a lot of the Katrina news has been dismal, some of the news has been positive with respect to the actions of many different groups of volunteers. One of the crises faced by the first responders in the affected areas was a lack of communications. Almost all of the commercial comms systems failed in the wake of the cat 4 winds and unprecedented storm surge. However, the amateur radio emergency groups were back on the air practically right away providing comms to devestated and overwhelmed state and local officials.
It took days for commerical comms to come back online. Often times equipment had to be shipped in from other locations. Hams more than filled this void, handling immediate comms and thousands of H & W messages.
The WSJ published a nice article on hams reponse to Katrina, go here to find it. Very complementary to the amateur radio community at large.
So whats the problem you ask. Well, this bit of fluff at the end of the WSJ article. A Motorola rep is quoted as saying "Something is better than nothing, ..." This from the company whose entire infrastucture in the city of new orleans failed. How ironic is that? ...73's DE ~Steve>
